The agricultural workers face many challenges that we as residents of Colorado may not imagine. One of those includes acclimating and working in temperatures that they are not used to encountering. Many of the workers live and come from warm climates where it does not snow, but here in Colorado it is vastly different, especially in January.
In January of 2022, the promotora Teresa Gomez said that she would be taking stuff to workers. When she called one worker, he told her that they were working but that they worked close to where they lived so one of them went to pick up the stuff where Teresa had left the stuff. In the meanwhile, Teresa was in her truck when she saw him walking and as she says, “there was so much snow, and it was snowing, and he did not have a jacket only a sweater.” When she saw that he did not have a jacket, Teresa asked the worker if he needed a jacket and he said he did and if she could give him another one for his colleague because he also did not have one. Originally Teresa told the workers that even though it was snowing she would bring them a few things but while dropping off the items she saw that the worker did not have a jacket. She gave him a jacket, but the worker had also asked for another one for his colleague that also needed one. Seeing that, Teresa also gave them clothes that her husband no longer used and later in the afternoon the workers called her to thank her and let her know that the clothing that she gave them, they would also be sharing that with other colleagues that needed jackets and they even sent her photos with some of the items she gave.
Due to the good relationship and communication that Teresa had with the workers she was able to help nine Hispanic workers and learn more about their situations. Without this relationship the workers may have kept being cold due to not having the right clothing like a jacket for the snow. Agricultural workers need help in acclimating to an unfamiliar environment and they also need help getting the right snow clothes. Without the help they would not be able to get what they need.
