This story discusses access to learning English. We know that maybe some agricultural workers from Latin America may not know how to speak English, but we may not know their experiences with Access to learning English. We can learn more about their experiences due to the work and help that promotora Rosalinda Garcia Vazquez engaged in. Rosalinda has used WhatsApp, texts messages and has also visited workers. In the month of January of 2022, she visited in person some workers at their jobs which includes farms and their homes and went to the city and some businesses.
As Rosalinda stated, “many of the workers have a lot of interest in learning English but due to lack of time they can’t.” Rosalinda and one of her colleagues of the organization Voces went and accompanied her to distribute some stuff and they met 20-30 young adults from Mexico that qualified for their program to learn English. In this program they will give them an MP3 with basic English classes but those who are older than 21 unfortunately do not qualify. We can see that one of the obstacles workers face when wanting to learn English is time. In order to overcome that obstacle there’s programs like the one mentioned above that give MP3s so that they can listen to it at the time that is most convenient, but we can see that there is also another obstacle which is that those who are older do not qualify for the program.
So, we can see here in this story that even though there may be the desire and motivation to learn English, sometimes workers do not have the opportunity nor the access to be able to do so.
