On December 2021 Project Protect promotora Claudia Chavez was calling and visiting the homes of agricultural workers individually and in groups. One of Claudia’s partners called her about a Hispanic woman who worked in the field and in this year, was diagnosed with cerebral paralysis. Claudia went to this woman’s home and learned that the woman was 40 years old. It was an emotional experience for Claudia since she saw that this individual needed a nurse or someone to take care of her and she had no one. Claudia commented that even though the worker was young, her story showed that in any moment life can change drastically.

When Claudia visited her, the Hispanic woman was in bed and did not qualify to have any personal assistance nor assistance for her physical therapy. She couldn’t move nor could she speak, all she was able to do is open her eyes. Her teenage children would take care of her. The family needed help showering her and they needed 6 people to be able to lift her from the bed. The community also saw the needs of this family. Once a week, volunteers of the community would go in groups to help the woman and her family. They helped shower her and they would bring clothes, adult diapers, bed sheets, and personal hygiene products. We can see that even though the woman’s diagnosis of cerebral paralysis has left this family in need, the community united and worked together to help them through the challenges they were facing. Although agricultural workers can face many unexpected challenges, their community unites and works together to help those in need.
