In mid-February, promotoras Anita Rodriguez and Gabby Rodriguez were delivering supplies to 45 agricultural workers in Rio Grande County, most of whom were from Mexico. They were a bit worried at first because they were driving a large U-Haul full of food, and they were uneasy about unloading all the supplies by themselves. Once they got there though, the promotoas were pleasantly surprised when many of the workers came over to help them unload the boxes of food. Some of the men even joked with Anita and Gabby by asking if they had brought any beer that would give them energy to unload all of the food. The women then came over to take some of the lettuce, carrots, and bread boxes to the lunch are, and the promotoras thought it was awesome to see how all the workers came together to help them unload the food, and it was fun to watch the workers laughing even though they were tired.

One of the young men joked with the promotoras and asked who had driven the truck. They responded, “we did, of course,” and he laughed, saying “I don’t think so.” Then Gabby and Anita proudly told him, “You don’t know how big of trucks I have driven!” The young man laughed, and another woman jokingly called them Lola La Trailer – a reference to an Spanish movie, which was a reference to a Mexican action-comedy movie from 1985. Anita and Gabby were invited to eat with the workers before they left with the U-Haul. Anita says, “They had Posole that one of the coworkers made to share and insisted we take some for later let me tell you it was delicious! They wouldn’t stop thanking us for everything we have done for them. Let me tell you it was a very wonderful outreach.”

After Anita and Gabby left, they realized that the promotoras had achieved such a large and wonderful outreach to the agricultural workers by having access to supplies and the U-Haul.
