Obstacles that Workers Face to Receive Assistance

Esta narración tiene varios trabajadores en mente, pero todos son unidos por su necesidad de asistencia. La promotora Juana Eneida Ramirez Molina estaba en contacto con 6 personas de la comunidad Villa Conchita con quienes se ha estado trabajando y de las cuales se sabe la necesidad de recursos económicos para cubrir sus necesidades básicas del hogar, para su situación migratoria y por altos costo de intereses que están pagando en deudas de su viaje a Estados Unidos.

Una salvadoreña en particular es sobreviviente de insuficiencia renal que significa que sus riñones ya no funcionan lo suficientemente bien como para realizar sus funciones y, como resultado se presentan otros problemas de salud. Eneida conoció a la salvadoreña de su comunidad y supo que estaba batallando con gastos médicos por su enfermedad y un pago de un seguro médico individual de $635 mensuales por ser indocumentada. Por su edad y condición e incluso esta deshabilitada es difícil para que ella trabaje, pero literalmente sino trabaja podría morirse porque medicamente es muy vulnerable y el costo medico es altísimo. Como dice Eneida, “el mayor desafío para llegar a [ayudar] a más personas es que no cumplen con todos los requisitos para aplicar a la ayuda. Algunos tienen documentos, pero no tienen comprobante de domicilio. Otros tienen el comprobante de dirección, pero no tienen ninguna identificación y en específico las personas de Nicaragua porque sus IDs fueron retenidos por migración y lo único que tienen de identificación es un carnet de ICE con su nombre y fecha de nacimiento.”

Como vemos aquí, hay muchos que necesitan ayuda, pero hay muchas barreras en las cuales se enfrentan antes de poder obtener la ayuda. Para los nicaragüenses, no les resulta fácil tener nueva identificación porque no hay consulado de Nicaragua en Colorado y tampoco usan figura de consulado móvil. Ofrecen también la opción de obtener un nuevo pasaporte vía postal, pero es un trámite que puede durar hasta 2 meses o más. Por la comunicación que Eneida y otras personas tienen con personas involucradas en la comunidad pudieron darse cuenta sobre la comunidad de Nicaragua. Los 8 trabajadores que ayudo Eneida le dieron las gracias y dijeron que “esta ayuda sería una gran bendición. Que lastima no cumplir con los requisitos.” Tal vez nosotros como ciudadanos no podemos imaginarnos teniendo estos obstáculos, pero como vemos aquí, esta es la triste realidad de muchos trabajadores nicaragüenses.

The promotora Juana Eneida Ramirez Molina was in contact with 6 people from the community Villa Conchita who she has been working with and knows that their economic needs include basic items for their home and help for their immigration situation which includes a high interest rate for their debt for traveling to the United States.

A Salvadoran woman in particular was a survivor of kidney failure which means her kidneys no longer function well enough to perform their functions and other health problems occur as a result. Eneida met this Salvadoran woman of her community and learned that she was struggling with the medical cost due to her illness and she paid her medical bill of $635 monthly due to being undocumented. Due to her age and condition, in fact she is also disabled, it is difficult for her to work, but if she does not work, she could die because she is very vulnerable medically and her medical costs are high. Like Eneida said, “the major challenge to be able to help more people is that they do not qualify for all the requirements to apply for help. Some of the workers have their documents but do not have proof of address. Others have proof of address but do not have any identification and specifically Nicaraguans because their IDs were held by migration and the only thing, they have of identification is an ICE card with their name and date of birth.”

We can see here that there are many that need help, but they face many challenges which prevent them from obtaining any type of assistance. For Nicaraguans, it is not easy for them to obtain new identification because there is no Nicaraguan consulate in Colorado, and they do not use a mobile consulate figure. They also offer the option of obtaining a new passport by post mail, but it is a procedure that can last up to 2 months or more. Due to the excellent communication that Eneida and others have with people involved in the community they were able to find out about the issues that the Nicaraguan community face. The eight workers that Eneida helped gave her thanks and told her that “this help would be a great blessing. It hurts not to meet the requirements.” As citizens of the U.S., we may not be able to imagine facing these obstacles, but as we can see here, this is a sad reality for many workers including Nicaraguans.
