For 16 years I worked in a dairy, it is a job that is hard and heavy, the work days are usually more than 10 hours for 5 days a week, we do not get paid overtime, there are no medical services or sick days. For a person without citizenship it is a great job opportunity. The only responsibility is to reach the production that they tell us. In many occasions the boss does not find out about the unjust treatment from the managers toward the workers.
My experience from working in a dairy was good because it is a job that is on 365 day a year, this permits you the stability to cover your basic needs. The summer of 2019 I suffered from a work accident, a bull hit me, breaking 12 of my ribs and fracturing my hip. At first my boss was nice and the work insurance covered the medical cost, after two months the doctor decided I could go back to work with some restrictions, my boss was not on the same page and I received threats from him saying that if I could not do the work then there would not be work for me. The demand was something that the boss did not like and I have received a lot of hostility from the boss and his defenders.
I am a father and I have a daughter who is a citizen, she is 10 years old and I have 2 sons that are studying and working thanks to the help of the DACA program. I am trying to educate myself as much as I can to defend my case, because even though rights are for everyone, legal status does effect that a lot.
I consider farmworkers, essential worker. But the wages and conditions of the workers are very unjust.
