This story comes from Sandra Ramos Gonzalez, a promotora who works within the Southeast region of Colorado. In late January, Sandra received a call from another promotora in Otero County who told her that there had been an accident involving ten immigrants from Guatemala. The promotora asked Sandra if she could go down to the local hospital to translate, especially since there was a minor present who was extremely scared and needed help from the promotoras. Upon arrival, it was also shared that some of the people involved in the accident had not survived, and that others who had survived ran away because they were terrified of law enforcement. Sandra returned her attention to the minor and she was sad to learn that because the young man was not 18, he would be put into the foster care system. Luckily though, she was able to work with the minor and CPS to find one of his family members, and he was released into their care. Afterwards, she received a text from the young man’s family, and they offered a million thanks to her for the support she provided on that scary day.
