This narrative focuses on the theme of medical accessibility and language. In February of 2022, the promotora Juana Eneida Ramirez Molina communicated with agricultural workers individually and in small groups using WhatsApp, text messages, emails, social media, and in person visit to worker’s homes. One of the families she encountered is from Guatemala and they had a child of 9 years old who needed surgery. Unfortunately, the parents, one of which worked at a dairy farm, did not have medical insurance. This family was asking for assistance to make a phone call in English because whenever they called in Spanish, they would have them wait on the line and did not attend them. Eneida was able to collaborate with another promotora, Teresa, to have her as an interpreter and they were able to make two appointments for the month of March. One appointment was with the department of Financial Assistance and the other appointment was with a doctor in urology. This family was very grateful for the help that they received.
Even though they had the option to call the department of Financial Assistance in Spanish this Hispanic family was unable to receive the assistance and access to what they needed because the services for Spanish speakers was not available to them. Due to this, it was important for someone to that was an English speaker to call in English to make appointments so that the family would be able to be a step closer in helping their child. In general, even if there are services in Spanish, sometimes these services are inundated with a lot of work and are not able to help everyone that needs assistance like we saw in this narrative.
