Agricultural Worker Discusses Salary

“Para tener mejores oportunidades de vida y darle a los hijos un mejor futuro. De que ellos estudien, tengan buen trabajo, tengan mejores oportunidades. De que los hijos no esten en el pais de uno con las pandillas. Para que los hijos tengan mejor estilo de vida que uno.”

[P: ¿Cómo es tu lugar de trabajo y tu casa?]

“Es un trabajo muy pesado y muy mal pagado. Porque se trabaja en un ambiente muy insalubre e deteroable. No hay un lugar o mesa donde las personas puedan comer su comida. Los trabajadores comen en el corral. No hay protección personal contra el covid19. El trabajo no exíge ni les proveé la protección adecuada contra el covid19. Si nadie lleva su propia protección, el trabajo no les da. No había calentones y es un ambiente muy frio. Apenas llevaron uno hace poco.  No hay mesa donde puedan poner sus cosas, o una silla para que tomen un descanso. No hay camaras, y les roban sus correos, cartas, cheques. Los trátan peor que esclavos.”

“No les proveén botas de insolación, ni equipo de trabajo. No les dan un pavo para dia de accion de gracias. Se trabajan las 24 horas los 365 dias del año. Los dueños no les importa porque no hay ley en Colorado que proteja a los trabajadores agricolas. Los dueños méten a muchas personas en una traila, y les cobra el mismo págo de renta aunque sean muchas personas ahí mismo.”

“Los animales también están descuidados. Los animals están al intemperie, al medio de la nada, afuera sufriendo las condiciones del clima. No los cuidan.  Los trabajadores no salen temprano ningun dia festivo, trabajan obligatoriamente los dias festivos y no les pagan tiempo extra. Trabajan 10 horas diarias y solo les dan 1 dia de descanso.”

“Algunas personas que no tienen dinero para ir a la lavanderia, van a lavar a las lavadoras de la lecheria en la noche (donde lavan las cosas de las vacas), y si se les llegan a olvidar la ropa, se las tirán a la basura, y los regañan. Deberían poner lavadoras de moneda para las personas que trabajan ahí, porque muchas personas no tienen carro para salir a lavar.”

“Los dueños méten a muchas personas en una traila, y les cobra el mismo págo de renta aunque sean muchas personas ahí mismo.”

[P: ¿Qué es lo más difícil?]

“Lo dificil son las condiciones y sobre todo no poder subir uno de puesto por el idioma. Porque uno no habla ingles tiene que aguantar el trabajo mas pesado y en las condiciones mas malas. Muchas personas no saben hablar ni escribir en su propio idioma. No pueden inscribirse en clases de ingles por el horario de trabajo. Aunque quieran estudiar no pueden porque no les rinde el tiempo.”

[Q: Why work here, in Colorado?]

“To have better life chances and give our children a better future. That they study, have a good job, have better opportunities. That our children are not in one's country with the gangs. So that our children have a better quality of life.”

[Q: What is your workplace and homelife like?]

“It is very heavy work and very low paid. Because you work in a very unhealthy deteriorating environment. There is no place or table where people can eat their food. The workers eat in the yard. There is no personal protection against covid19. The job does not require or provide adequate protection against covid19. If nobody carries their own protection, the job does not give it to them. There were no heaters, and it is a very cold environment. They just installed one recently. There is no table where they can put their things or a chair for them to take a break. There are no cameras, and their mail, letters, checks are stolen. They are treated worse than slaves.

“They do not provide insulated boots or work equipment. They don't give them a turkey for Thanksgiving. They work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The owners don't care because there is no law in Colorado that protects farmworkers. The owners put many people in a trailer home, and they charge the same rent even if there are many people living there.”

“The animals are also neglected. Animals are out in the open, in the middle of nowhere, outside suffering from weather conditions. They don't take care of them. Workers do not leave early on any public holiday, they work obligatorily on public holidays and are not paid overtime. They work 10 hours a day and only get 1 day off.”

“Some people who do not have money to go to the laundromat, go to the dairy washing machines at night (where they wash the things of the cows), and if they forget their clothes, they will throw them away, and scold them. They should put coin washers for the people who work there because many people don't have a car to go out to wash.”

“The owners put many people in a trailer home, and they charge the same rent even if there are many people living there.”

[Q: What is most difficult?]

“The difficult thing is the conditions and above all not being able to be promoted because of the language barrier. Because one does not speak English he has to endure the heaviest work and in the worst conditions. Many people cannot speak or write in their own language. They cannot take English classes because of work hours. Even if they want to study, they can't because they don't have time.”
