No health insurance and diagnosed with cancer.

A few months ago I have been helping Maria a farm worker who lives in the city of Greeley, we met at a church meeting and she asked me where I worked, I mentioned to her that I work for an organization called Project Protect Promotora Network that helps farm workers, she let me know that she works in agriculture in a dairy and asked me for help because she had outstanding medical bills, since she does not have health insurance and does not know how to navigate the health system to access discounts or charity programs that help people with limited resources.

In this regard it is important to note that farmers earn minimum wage in Colorado and also overtime is even after 60 hours of work in a week, something that definitely impacts their income, quality of life and access to healthcare.

Maria in fact is very worried because her health was not very good, she had no insurance and needed urgent medical studies, so to alleviate this concern I took her to the hospital and showed her how to ask for help for the charity program in which she was approved.

About 3 months after that in December 2022, Maria called me and gave me the news that she was diagnosed with cancer in the uterus, it broke both our hearts, she was very worried thinking that she could die and especially thinking that she did not have enough resources to make the treatments of a terminal illness, However, I reminded her that she had the charity program approved, that this would help her a little so that she could be attended by a doctor in the hospital and that her life had more value than any medical debt, and with this said, she began to be attended, more studies were done and surgery was scheduled immediately.

Her eyes were still showing uncertainty, Maria is a single woman, almost 60 years old, she has no children and her only sister in the USA is in a nursing home, she does not speak or walk because she had a stroke, basically she is alone, she has no one in her family that can give her economic or moral support, in this difficult time, so she has found in us, the promoters of Project Protect, a support, a ray of hope.

I committed myself to be with her in this process, I picked her up at her house, took her to the hospital, accompanied her to register her, interpret, pray and squeeze her hand before she entered the surgery that was scheduled for 10:30 am and lasted about 3 hours and a half, then I stayed at the hospital waiting for news about the results since there were two scenarios one where they would only do a hysterectomy and another where they could intervene up to the intestines, thank God the cancer was concentrated only in the uterus.

The Doctor called me to let me know that the surgery went well without complications, Maria had taken the first step to start this battle against cancer, other chemotherapy and radiation treatments will come, but we will be there with her to support her in the process, as her recovery will take quite some time. We will be there with her to support her in the process, because her recovery will take a long time, where she will not have a salary, so as promoters we will manage different aids for her to overcome this difficult stage, especially because this disease is not only about surgery, it is also about mental health, how not to let her fall into depression and anxiety so that she can recover and can return to work, feel alive and productive.

Maria's case continues to remind us that access to health care should be a fundamental human right, regardless of race or immigration status. Life is worth more than a medical debt!
