This story originates from a group of agricultural workers who live in Otero County within the Southeast region of Colorado. Diane Mendez, a promotora who works in that area, explained that in the beginning of October, a group of eight workers called her to ask if she would speak to the office manager of their housing complex to ask if it would be possible for the laundry mat to stay open longer so they would have time to do their laundry. The workers explained to her that they often worked later than usual on Saturday and that they were hoping to get their laundry done because they had to return to Mexico. Since it was late autumn, it would get dark sooner in the evening and it would be more difficult for the workers to try to walk to the laundry mat in town. After sharing the workers’ reasoning with the office manager of the housing complex, it was agreed that if Diane went and locked the laundry mat up when the workers were finished, then the laundry mat could stay open longer. They workers all expressed thanks to Diane and were very grateful for her help.
