Promotora from Project Protect Food System Workers interview a migrant agricultural worker about their experience as a farmworker in Colorado. The farmworker describes some challenges of working in the fields. They also discuss the weather and family.

[Promotora] Empezando la entrevista con otro trabajador del campo de aquí en Colorado. Empezamos con esta persona que está trabajando, ella está trabajando en el área de plantaciones y están recogiendo las frutas, verduras, todo. Desde plantar hasta cosechar.

[Promotora] Ok, vamos a empezar con la primera pregunta, que es: ¿Me puedes decir un poco sobre lo que es trabajar en Colorado, como trabajador agrícola?
[Trabajadora] Sí, pues este, es algo difícil, pero a la vez es bonito porque tiene uno… ahí puede uno comer de las verduras que hay. Y lo difícil, pues es por luego por el tiempo, que está lloviendo, que hace mucho calor, así para los guantes. Este equipo para trabajar porque se moja uno cuando está lloviendo.

[Promotora] Ok. Por favor, descríbeme tu experiencia trabajando en granjas en Colorado. ¿Cómo ha sido tu experiencia en el trabajo?
[Trabajadora] Pues ha sido algo difícil porque, llega uno aquí sin nada. No tiene uno mueble para moverse y batalla uno para ir a trabajar. Y todo eso, batalla uno para hacerlo, pero sigue uno adelante como… del modo que sea pues sigue uno adelante

[Promotora] Ok. ¿Qué sería algo difícil de trabajar con los agricultores de Colorado, en las granjas? ¿Algo difícil, algo que se te dificulta? ¿O que se les dificulta a tus compañeros?
[Trabajadora] No pues, este ya cuando uno empieza a trabajar pues ya no es difícil, ya sabiendo cómo hacer el trabajo ya no es tan difícil.

[Trabajadora] Lo difícil es, como, cuando llega uno aquí que no tiene uno los medios para seguir, este, en el trabajo.
[Promotora] Ok. ¿Qué crees que causan algunas dificultades?
[Trabajadora] Pues este, el tiempo, el clima. Sobre todo, cuando hace mucho calor, si se fatiga uno. Quiere uno tomar bastante agua. Si llueve, quiere uno tener un hule para cubrirse. Son muchas las dificultades trabajar en el campo, no es nada fácil. Es muy difícil, muy duro.

[Promotora] Ok. ¿Por qué trabajas aquí en Colorado? ¿Por qué escogiste venir aquí a Colorado o por qué aquí Colorado?

[Trabajadora] Porque yo… aquí trabajo parte de mi familia, mi papá. Llegué aquí porque él fue quien me apoyó para estar yo aquí y seguir adelante. Y yo aquí, así, por eso yo aquí sigo.
[Promotora] Ok. ¿Qué fue lo que te hizo venir a inmigrar, prácticamente, para aquí a Colorado? ¿O venirte a establecer aquí en Colorado?

[Trabajadora] Pues la necesidad, de no tener nada en México. Nada, nada. O sea que eso fue lo que me motivó a venirme para acá.
[Promotora] ¿Te hizo emigrar para acá?
[Trabajadora] Sí

[Promotora] Ok. Si pudieras tener un minuto para hablar directamente con los legisladores estatales, los representantes, los que tienen poder en el Gobierno. ¿Qué les dirías?
[Trabajadora] Pues lo mismo que les estoy diciendo que no, pues no es nada fácil trabajar en el campo. Si batalla uno porque luego se le termina a uno el trabajo y luego no tiene uno donde ir. Por no tener un seguro bueno, tiene uno que batallar, buscando trabajo en el campo, en las granjas de aquí.

[Trabajadora] Sí, eso es otra cosa que también es difícil, porque uno deja de lo que más quiere, que es su familia.

[Promotora] Starting the interview with another farm worker from here in Colorado. Lets start
with this person who is working, she is working in the plantation area and they are picking fruits, vegetables, everything. From planting to harvest.

[Promotora] Ok, let's start with the first question, which is: Can you tell me a little about what it's like to work in Colorado as a farm worker?
[Worker] Yes, well, it is somewhat difficult, but at the same time it is beautiful because it has one … there you can eat any of the vegetables. And the difficult part, well it is because of time, because it rains, then it gets really hot, like as for gloves, when it begins to rain, we get all wet even with the equipment.

experience at work been?
[Worker] Well, it has been difficult because, one arrives here with nothing. You don't have one
piece of furniture to move around, and you struggle to go to work. And all that, one battles to
do it, but one has to keep moving forward like… in any way you can but one has to keep moving
forward.

[Promotora] Ok. What would be a difficult thing about working with Colorado farmers, on farms? Something difficult, something that is difficult for you? Or that it is difficult for your colleagues?
[Worker] No, well, once you start working, it is not difficult anymore, knowing how to do the job is not so difficult anymore.

[Worker] The difficult thing is, like, when one arrives here that one does not have the means to
continue at work.
[Promotora] Ok. What do you think causes some difficulties?
[Worker] Well, the climate, the weather. Especially when it's really hot, one does get tired.
One wants to drink plenty of water. If it rains, you want to have a rubber to cover yourself. There are many difficulties in working in the fields, it is not easy at all. It is very difficult, very hard.

[Promotora] Ok. Why do you work here in Colorado? Why did you choose to come here to
Colorado or why here in Colorado?

[Worker] Because I … part of my family worked here, my dad. I came here because he was the
one who supported me to be here and move on. And I'm here, like this, that's why I'm still here.
[Promotora] Ok. What was it that made you come to emigrate, practically, here to Colorado? Or come and settle here in Colorado?

[Worker] Because of necessity, due to having nothing in Mexico. Nothing, nothing. So that was
what motivated me to come here.
[Promotora] Did that make you emigrate here?[Worker] Yes

representatives, the ones with power in the government. What would you say to them?
[Worker] Well, the same thing that I am telling you. That it’s no… it is not easy to work in the
field. We do struggle because work ends, or your job runs out and then you have nowhere to go.
Because you don't have good insurance, you have to struggle, looking for work in the fields, on the farms here.
