Un sueño, Una Mujer y una comunidad

Es enero de 2022 en Greeley Colorado, ha estado cayendo nieve los últimos días, me dieron su contacto y me dijeron SARA*  Es una mujer muy luchadora, pero su esposo la abandonó y necesita ayuda, tiene una bebé de 8 meses, trabajaba en la Zanahoria pero el trabajo se detuvo por el invierno.

Y así fue como llegué a la comunidad  ESPERANZA*, ella vive ahí y nos juntamos en el parqueo, la miré, luce delgada y sus ojos están tristes, se quedó pensativa y le pregunté ¿sucede algo? A lo que ella respondió  “Yo he sufrido mucho”.

Pero yo no le quiero hablar acerca de mí sino acerca de unos jóvenes y otras personas que son mis paisanos, algunos no tienen donde dormir, tampoco tienen suficiente ropa y abrigos para el frío.

Aquella mujer abandonada estaba abogando por otros, cuando ni siquiera tenía para cubrir sus propias necesidades, estaba batallando con la renta, con la despensa y las cuentas de los recibos pero se olvidó de sí misma para enfocarse en la necesidad de los demás.

Hablé con los muchachos y visité sus casas, en la primera no había nada adentro más que el refrigerador y  la estufa, estaban durmiendo en el piso, SARA les ha prestado dos sillas un poco desgastadas para que puedan sentarse, me preguntó uno de ellos “cuánto tiempo se tardaría en encontrarnos unos colchones, ya no aguanto dormir en el piso frío”, tenían un mes de haber llegado para trabajar en la agricultura y construcción,  el clima de su país Nicaragua es tropical, es aquí cuando pudieron tocar y sentir la nieve por primera vez. Era difícil no sentir dolor, están entre los 19 y 22 años.

SARA me comentó que hay otros que recogieron un sillón de la basura, pero de repente comenzaron a sentir que los estaban picando, el sofá tenía garrapatas pero ella les regaló un spray para espantarlas. Miré ese sillón en mi  siguiente visita y nunca hubiera imaginado que fuese rescatado de la basura, era de color café  y lucia muy limpio, era la cama de alguien por las noches.

No pasaron muchos días y el teléfono volvió a sonar una y otra vez, eran nuevos referidos de SARA y luego de un par de días finalmente llegó la ayuda para todos, al menos tenían un colchón para dormir y abrigos.  Algunas personas de la comunidad donaron ropa y cobijas, ellos estaban felices y SARA también porque  los están mirando como sus hijos.

¡SARA sin pedir nada recibió ayuda, ese principio de dar para recibir se cumple!

A ella la impulsa su comunidad y su corazón, su misión de abogar por otros continúa y seguramente continuará…

A dream, a woman and a community

It is January 2022 in Greeley Colorado, snow has been falling for the last few days. I was given her contact info and was told SARA* She is a very strong woman, but her husband left her and she needs help. She has an 8 month old baby and she was working the Carrot crop but work was stopped for the winter.

That is how I arrived at the ESPERANZA* community. She lives there and we gathered at the park. I looked at her, she looks thin and her eyes are sad. She was very pensive and I asked “Is something wrong”? To which she responded, “I have suffered a lot.”

But I don’t want to talk about me, I want to talk about some young people and other people who are my countrymen. Some don’t have anywhere to sleep, they also don’t have enough clothes and coats for the cold. 

That abandoned woman was advocating for others, when she didn't even have enough for her own needs, she was struggling with rent, groceries and bills, but she forgot about herself to focus on the needs of others.

I talked to the guys and visited their houses. In the first one, there was nothing inside but the refrigerator and the stove. They were sleeping on the floor, SARA had let them borrow two chairs that are a little worn out so they could sit. One of them asked me "how long would it take to find us some mattresses, I can't stand sleeping on the cold floor anymore,” They had arrived a month ago to work in agriculture and construction. The climate in their country of Nicaragua is tropical. It was here where they could touch and feel snow for the first time. It was difficult not to feel pain, they are between 19 and 22 years old.

SARA told me about others that picked up a couch from the garbage, but suddenly they began to feel like they were being bitten. The couch had ticks but she gave them a spray to scare them away. I looked at the couch on my next visit and never would have guessed it was rescued from the trash, it was brown and very clean. It was someone’s bed at night. 

Not too many days had gone by and the phone rang again and again. They were new referrals from SARA and after a couple of days help finally arrived for everyone. At least they had coats and a mattress to sleep on.  Some people from the community donated clothes and blankets, they were happy and so was SARA because they are looking at them as their children.

SARA without asking for anything received help. That principle of giving to receive is fulfilled!

She is driven by her heart and her community. Her mission to advocate for others continues and will surely continue....
