A young musician’s dream comes true - the guitar he always wanted.

Anita met Remik Reyes, an H-2A agricultural visa worker at Rodrigues Camp, a worker housing unit for Fresh Harvest. At this facility, the workers tend to lettuce fields. He was 19 years old and had been coming for 2 years with the company. He told Anita that he has always dreamt of owning a guitar, that's all he wanted. But, in Mexico they were too expensive. 

Anita says, 

“He found out that the other guys were having me order them sleeping pads, or sneakers, or whatever the guys needed. And so he brought me this picture of the guitar on Amazon.com and he said, ‘Can you order this for me?’ He found the exact one he wanted, and so we placed the order together. 

“He had been calling me and calling me, asking ‘Is it here yet, is it here yet?’ And one day he just came over - him and another one of his buddies that he hung out with - and that same day I had received a box earlier and I had brought it in and set it down by my TV. So he came over one day and we were making friendly conversation and he said, ‘I just wanted to come by, I was on my way to the grocery store, and I just wanted to ask you if you know when the guitar will be here?’ And I said, I was like “Oh, do you think it’s that box right there!” 

“And so he was opening that box like it was a gift, like it was Christmas. I wish you could have seen his face, just like a little kid, tearing the box open and opening it and taking it out of the box. He was tuning it and stuff and he was like I’m going to sing you a song. He sang a few songs, and then sang a song he wrote, an original. And I had a friend here and her two daughters so we all listened to him sing.

“And then he said “I’m going to sing you a song that my grandpa and I used to sing together.” He said, ‘My grandpa, by the way, just passed away last week and obviously I couldn’t be there. But he was like a dad to me, because he taught me how to work. My dad left when I was little, so my grandpa was my dad. You don’t have no idea what this means to me, to get this guitar especially right now, and in this moment. And to be able to sign to get my mind off of my grandpa and I will see him eventually. I’ll go to Mexico when I leave, and I’ll be able to go to him and sing to him then too.’ And he was singing song after song. And my friend was tearing up and we were all crying because of his story and telling us about his grandpa and stuff. My friend asked him, ‘Do you think you could sing a song for my daughter? She is going to be 15 next Sunday. Will you go to her house next week and sing for her?’ and he said sure! But, he also sang for her right then, too. His face just lit up. He kept asking what songs we wanted to hear and he was just singing and singing. Soon, my family arrived and were like ‘wow! He’s got a good voice!’ 

“He told me ‘I am going to write a song for you and everything you have done for us. Today, he still messages me on Whatsapp to check in and say ‘Hi’. For them to remember you even when they are far, and to send you a message and see how you are doing, it makes you feel good, like you did something right, you know?”  

The day that finally received the guitar he always wanted was September 22, 2022.

Anita conoció a Remik Reyes, un trabajador con visa agrícola H-2A en el campamento Rodrígues, una unidad de vivienda para trabajadores de Fresh Harvest. En estas instalaciones, los trabajadores se ocupan de los campos de lechugas. Él tenía 19 años y ha estado viniendo por dos años con la compañía. Le dijo a Anita que él siempre había soñado con tener una guitarra, era todo lo que él quería, pero que en México eran demasiado caras.

Dice Anita, "Él se enteró de que los otros muchachos me hacían encargarles colchonetas para dormir, o zapatos deportivos, o lo que fuera que los muchachos necesitaran. Así que me trajo esta foto de una guitarra en Amazon.com y me dijo: “¿Me puede encargar esto?” Había encontrado exactamente la que quería, así que hicimos el pedido juntos.

"Me había estado llamando y llamando, preguntándome: “¿Ya llegó, ya llegó?”. Un día simplemente pasó -él y otro de sus compañeros con el que pasaba el tiempo- y ese mismo día había llegado una caja más temprano y yo la había metido y puesto cerca de mi televisor. Así que un día pasó por aquí y estábamos hablando amistosamente cuando me dijo: "Sólo quería pasar, iba de camino a la tienda de comestibles, y sólo quería preguntarle si sabía cuándo iba a llegar la guitarra". Y le dije "¿Oh, tú crees que es esa caja que está ahí?".

"Y entonces estaba abriendo esa caja como si fuera un regalo, como si fuera Navidad. Me hubiese gustado que hubieras podido ver su cara, como si fuera un niño pequeño, desgarrando la caja y abriéndola y la sacó fuera de la caja. La estaba afinando y todo eso, como diciendo te voy a cantar una canción. Cantó unas cuantas canciones y entonces cantó una canción que compuso, original. Y yo tenía a una amiga aquí, con sus dos hijas, así que todas lo escuchamos cantar.

Y entonces dijo: "Voy a cantarles una canción que mi abuelo y yo solíamos cantar juntos". Nos dijo: "De hecho, mi abuelo acaba de fallecer la semana pasada y obviamente no pude estar allí. Pero él fue como un padre para mí, porque me enseñó a trabajar. Mi papá se fue cuando yo era pequeño, así que mi abuelo fue mi padre. No tiene ni idea de lo que esto significa para mí, recibir esta guitarra especialmente ahora y en este momento. Y poder cantar para dejar de pensar en mi abuelo, sabiendo que volveré a verlo eventualmente. Iré a México cuando me vaya y podré ir a verlo y cantarle también entonces”. Y fue cantando una canción tras otra. Y a mi amiga se le saltaban las lágrimas y todas llorábamos por su historia y por habernos hablado de su abuelo y esas cosas. Mi amiga le preguntó: “¿Crees que podrías cantarle una canción a mi hija? Va a cumplir 15 años el próximo domingo. ¿Podrías ir a su casa la semana que viene y cantarle?” y él dijo ¡Claro que sí! Pero además le cantó a ella en ese momento también! Su cara se iluminó. No paraba de preguntarnos qué canciones queríamos oír y no hacía más que cantar y cantar. Al poco rato llegó mi familia y se asombraron, “¡wow! ¡Tiene bonita voz!'.

Me dijo: “Voy a escribir una canción para usted y por todo lo que ha hecho por nosotros”. Hoy en día todavía me envía mensajes por Whatsapp para ver cómo están las cosas y decir “Hola”. Que se sigan acordando de tí aún cuando estén lejos y que envíen un mensaje y para ver cómo estás, te hace sentir bien, como que hiciste algo bueno, ¿sabes?". 


El día que por fin recibió la guitarra que siempre quiso fue el 22 de septiembre del 2022.
