<text>

</text>

He then explained that he had been injured on the job at the end of January after he was sickened while welding. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he had some blood tests done and received oxygen. A week later, he was experiencing consistent chest pain, so Zoila reached out to a local doctor who advised him to take some aspirin for the time being. The worker did not have any aspirin on hand, so Zoila contacted her team member Anita Rodrigues, a promotores from Center, CO. Anita was able to meet the worker and his friend at gas station to gave him medicine and a bag of emergency food and medicine kit.

The promotores continued to follow up with the worker through WhatsApp messages, even calling a doctor in Mexico who advised him “eat bananas, tomatoes, milk.”

The promotoras advised the worker to inform his employer about his recent health issues, but the worker did not want to bother anyone and felt that he would be okay, so he continued to work even though he should have been resting. The worker expressed an immense sense of relief and gratitude towards the promotoras who gave him supplies and helped him to feel that he was not alone in his health struggles.
</text>

<text>
In early February, Regional Director of the Promotores del Valle de San Luis, Zoila Gomez, was contacted by a neighborhood champion in Alamosa County who had heard about nearby agricultural families that needed some supplies. According to Norma, the neighborhood champion, these families lived in agricultural housing and some of their kids had recently been sent home after testing positive for COVID-19. These students were children to parents who are employed in local agricultural industry and live in agricultural housing (Tierra Nueva). Zoila and her team of promotores store surplus materials, COVIDS resources, and food in the front office of the housing complex and trust Norma to have access to the storage to get access to what she needs for the community. With this long-established community trust, the promotoras were able to provide food, medicine, and hygiene kits to 24 people within a day of them testing positive for COVID.

Zoila says “Norm tells me, she and the families feel cared for because we trust them and leave resources available for them to use right there. Also having access to the office there has been huge help. They let us use the kitchen to leave kits and emergency bags.”
</text>

              <text>
I met “X” at one of our H2A workers events. He approached me asking to help make an appointment with Social Security. I tried for 3 weeks but there no answer trying to get ahold of the Social Security office. Then X calls me one afternoon I apologize as I have no response. He told me he needed a ride to Center, CO – he had missed his ride. I attempted to see if anyone was going that direction and could take him. But no luck - I took him. It is hard to get out to Alamosa as transportation is hard to find sometimes. On occasion the campero will take some people but he is always busy, so it is rare.

2nd occasion: I got his appointment and double checked that his paperwork was good to go with the immigrant resource center in town. I offered me or a community organizer to take him but he decided to asked the campero first to take him and he agreed. The appointment was at 12:30pm, so I contacted him to double check at 11:00am he was on board and with papers ready to go. At 11:30 he send me message saying “Campero cancel” and told him he was very busy to reschedule appointment any day of the week except Thursdays or Fridays. X missed the appointment.

Matters worsted: He is notified he is on the list to go back home the following week. He was confused “was this just luck or did making the appointment with SS messed him up?” He called me to vent and ask advise. I suggested for him to double check why he was being send back home and to request to stay. He did so, the answer was “you are on the list, for going back” no explanation as of why.

X asked me one más favor - to bring him to Alamosa to buy some phones for family. We learned about T-Mobil’s two lines and free phones for $80 $ 40 a month - not bad! He did not want someone else to take him, he said he felt safe with me which leads me to:

One worker- From Center to Alamosa: In numbers 4 hours including taking him to phone store and translating. I took him around Alamosa to show him, stopped at Walmart and took him to get food. There he shared with me that paying for food was expensive in Center. Sometimes going alone to a restaurant was $18 per meal- he would go when bored from food at the camp which he already pays like $10 a day.

This outreach costed PPPN around $150-$200. If we had a van and schedule we would be making a huge difference not for one but for many more and for the same price. So bus transportation and perhaps good food catering would be life changing changes at this location (Rodriguez Camp- Fresh Harvest in Center)

X was very, very grateful, offered to pay for gas but of course I declined - He said- if the group ever need anything count on me.
</text>

To make you feel bad (unintelligible) everyone has told you, get close (unintelligible) do not be afraid because, if you are afraid... no. This vaccine is very good for you and to help all the people.

Promoter: Thank you, Mr. Don Refugio.

Worker: Andele.

Promoter: Thank you!

Worker: And I give advice to everybody...

Promoter: Thank you very much!

Worker: ...and many are going to see if...

Promoter: Super!

Worker: ...Since they are waiting for the one with the age...

Promoter: Already, already!

Worker: Already?

Promoter: Sixty, sixty-four...

Worker: Sixty and sixty-four...

Promoter: And now, all the farmers can start registering so that they can talk to them.

Worker: But it is very good to put it on because it helps a lot.

Promoter: Great, thank you! What happened to you in the second one?

Worker: Eh, a lot of headache, like a little.... They just told me if I didn't feel well not to come and I didn't come.

Promoter: Ah, that's good!

Worker: And the first one I did come.

Promoter: Did they support you at work?

Worker: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Promoter: Ah... Do you feel supported?

Worker: Yes, of course.

Promotora: How cool! How cool! And after the vaccination, how do you feel?

Worker: Yes, it helped me a lot, I feel better, now that I've had it, I feel like I'm walking better. I feel better, now that I got it, I feel more relieved.

Promoter: Yes, with more confidence....

Worker: More confidence. Yes, well, however it is, she no longer has afraid of someone grabbing it, or giving it to someone else. I have a lot... he is going to have a lot...

Promoter: She has faith.

Worker: Yes. But I still say don't take off the mask.

Promoter: And we brought you masks there, ok.

Worker: Where to?

Promoter: Extras, there.
</text>

In late January, Trini was contacted by an agricultural worker in Montrose County who needed help with making an appointment with the DMV to take his written test. Additionally, the worker was having difficulty securing a ride to the test, and he asked for aid with getting the test translated to Spanish. Unfortunately, Trini was unable to take the worker to the test, but she was able to still schedule the appointment for him and she found another promotora who would be able to drive him to the DMV as well as act as a translator for him during the test.</text>

She needed to be able to clearly communicate with the doctor because in her previous appointments, the doctors had not listened to her medical concerns and disregarded the symptoms that she had been feeling. This was highly frustrating for the worker because these doctors had only been checking her for one problem and then recommending that she follow-up at an emergency room instead of taking the time to ensure that they properly understood all the worker’s symptoms. Although it took some effort and patience, Trini and the agricultural worker were able to speak with this new doctor who took her concerns seriously and listened to them as they described all the worker’s symptoms. In the end, the doctor was able to order some bloodwork as well as schedule her for imaging and a follow-up appointment where they could go over the results of the tests as well as recheck her symptoms and scan for possible illnesses.</text>

</text>

Today I will tell you about a worker I met in an agricultural field. She has been working in agriculture for 40 years. At a young age, she migrated from Mexico to California. That is where she got her start in agricultural work. This lady has worked in strawberries, peaches, oranges, apples and grapes.

It was difficult for her to continue working in California because she suffered abuses in her work, such as long hours and not getting paid. She was scammed, and hurt and received no support from her employer. What forced her to come to Colorado was that immigration started going to the job sites and her job was one of them.

She is currently here. She rents a very small place. It's just a room where she sleeps. She cooks on a small grill. She has no kitchen or living room, she shares a bathroom. This worker is not married, she has no children. She tells me that at 65 years of age she does not have the strength she used to have and she is very worried about the future. She says she doesn't know how to do any work other than in the fields, she cannot read or write. She tells me that in me she has found great support and for the first time a person who understands her and whom she can trust.
</text>

              <text>Como muchos de nosotros, los trabajadores también tienen necesidades de salud. Especialmente con la pandemia todos necesitamos cuidarnos y tener las herramientas apropiadas para prevenir la propagación del virus Covid-19. Por eso promotoras como Teresa Gomez han llevado guantes y botellas de desinfectante a los trabajadores agrícolas.

              <text>Like many of us, agricultural workers also have medical needs. Especially with the pandemic we all need to take care of ourselves and have access to the tools that will help prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Therefore, promotoras like Teresa Gomez took gloves and bottles of hand sanitizer to the agricultural workers.

In January of 2022, Teresa went with individuals or sometimes with small groups to give out gloves, 4 big bottles of hand sanitizer, soap for the hands, scarves, toys, secondhand clothing, and a chair for a baby. She took these items and helped 33 agricultural workers from Mexico. Teresa was able to give them new scarves that someone had taken and was able to obtain secondhand clothing that was donated to them from Fort Lupton. Since she was only able to take them these items when they were working, she was only able to give items to 5 homes and when she went to the last home some workers that she had spoken to on the phone came and so she had the opportunity to speak with some of the other workers. The workers were very happy, and they took the items in a bin. After she had left, she called them, and they told her that everything was useful and asked if she could bring them masks because that is something they need. They also told Teresa that “it would be great if she could bring them personal care items since they are not able to do so since they do not have transportation.”

We can see from this narrative that the agricultural workers need personal protective equipment (PPE) like masks, and it is important that they have these things especially because we are in a pandemic. We can also see that due to the donations and help that the community and Teresa have been able to provide for the workers they were able to address a need. Many of the items that they need they are not able to go buy due to inaccessibility to transportation as one of the workers stated, they do not have transportation, so it becomes vital that they receive help from others to obtain the items that they need for their health and wellbeing. We can all come together to help meet these needs which will not only benefit agricultural workers but the community.</text>
