<text>

              <text>

</text>

I made sure they knew where everything was, and they took over the kitchen and made themselves at home. And each one of them had a backpack full of bowls and spoons and spices, and the whole 9 yards they had it in that backpack. They each had their role of what they would have to do to make it. They would have shrimp, cucumbers cut into little squares, onions, they would squiz a lot of lemon juice and they would have different bowls of lemon juice because they would put different spices in it. They had so many spices! Like eight different kinds of spices, but let me tell you it was sooo good. They would get the spices here at the Mexican store here, but I know they did bring a couple spices they knew they wouldn’t be able to find here, they did bring them from Mexico. They said that they felt at home and that's what they loved about it, it felt like home. They would bring a 6 pack or 12 pack and drink here and they would offer us some. Sometimes they would stay even later, and watch a movie, or we would put music on and they would tell us stories about what they did in the camp, or in the field and just give us little clues about how they were treating them at work. And it was nice, because I live alone, and to have them here at my house it felt like I was part of their family or they were a part of mine.

These guys were awesome. Two of the three guys were married in Mexico and one of them told me about his wife being really sick, how she needed surgery and her medical conditions. They told us a little about their story and they are really, really nice guys. I loved hearing about their stories when they were young, and now with their kids being grow. ANd sad at the time and they are only at home maybe two months out of the year and their kids are growing up without them. They have always worked in agriculture. They first had them in Yuma Arizona, sometimes they would take them to California, and then here, and then they would go back home for a couple months then back to Yuma. One of the guys has been working with this company for like seven years.

They only had one day off a week, sometimes they worked every day. But when they did get that day off, it was at least once a month if not two times a month. And I would give them rides to go grocery shopping, or a ride to go pay their phone bill. Obviously they didn’t like the food that was made for them at work, at the camp. And everyday they would make something different for themselves, often they make food at the park. They make all kinds of food there, like ceviche, a tuna casserole, soups - there at the park they would make all this food. But for aguachiles, they needed to have water to make that, so they would ask to come here, to my kitchen. There is a big kitchen at the camp where they made the food for the workers, but the workers aren’t allowed in it. They have a cafeteria kitchen in there, but they don’t have water for cooking, plus they want to be on their own and make their own food and talk to different people outside of their job.

And last year we invited them to come for Easter and they came and ate with us. And the following week they were like, Okay we are going to make something for you guys. We’re going to make marinated chicken and potatoes and I would invite everyone to come. So I made sure that my family was here when they would come. For two years in a row they would come to our house and make aguachiles, we made them food, they made us food and we even go to the carnival together!

They keep in touch with us through Facebook and they became really good friends with me and my family.
</text>

              <text>

</text>

              <text>
Anita met Remik Reyes, an H-2A agricultural visa worker at Rodrigues Camp, a worker housing unit for Fresh Harvest. At this facility, the workers tend to lettuce fields. He was 19 years old and had been coming for 2 years with the company. He told Anita that he has always dreamt of owning a guitar, that's all he wanted. But, in Mexico they were too expensive.

Anita says,

“He found out that the other guys were having me order them sleeping pads, or sneakers, or whatever the guys needed. And so he brought me this picture of the guitar on Amazon.com and he said, ‘Can you order this for me?’ He found the exact one he wanted, and so we placed the order together.

“He had been calling me and calling me, asking ‘Is it here yet, is it here yet?’ And one day he just came over - him and another one of his buddies that he hung out with - and that same day I had received a box earlier and I had brought it in and set it down by my TV. So he came over one day and we were making friendly conversation and he said, ‘I just wanted to come by, I was on my way to the grocery store, and I just wanted to ask you if you know when the guitar will be here?’ And I said, I was like “Oh, do you think it’s that box right there!”

“And so he was opening that box like it was a gift, like it was Christmas. I wish you could have seen his face, just like a little kid, tearing the box open and opening it and taking it out of the box. He was tuning it and stuff and he was like I’m going to sing you a song. He sang a few songs, and then sang a song he wrote, an original. And I had a friend here and her two daughters so we all listened to him sing.

“And then he said “I’m going to sing you a song that my grandpa and I used to sing together.” He said, ‘My grandpa, by the way, just passed away last week and obviously I couldn’t be there. But he was like a dad to me, because he taught me how to work. My dad left when I was little, so my grandpa was my dad. You don’t have no idea what this means to me, to get this guitar especially right now, and in this moment. And to be able to sign to get my mind off of my grandpa and I will see him eventually. I’ll go to Mexico when I leave, and I’ll be able to go to him and sing to him then too.’ And he was singing song after song. And my friend was tearing up and we were all crying because of his story and telling us about his grandpa and stuff. My friend asked him, ‘Do you think you could sing a song for my daughter? She is going to be 15 next Sunday. Will you go to her house next week and sing for her?’ and he said sure! But, he also sang for her right then, too. His face just lit up. He kept asking what songs we wanted to hear and he was just singing and singing. Soon, my family arrived and were like ‘wow! He’s got a good voice!’

“He told me ‘I am going to write a song for you and everything you have done for us. Today, he still messages me on Whatsapp to check in and say ‘Hi’. For them to remember you even when they are far, and to send you a message and see how you are doing, it makes you feel good, like you did something right, you know?”

The day that finally received the guitar he always wanted was September 22, 2022.
</text>

</text>

The hours he works are 6AM until 10-11PM when it gets busy (almost always in the summer). Although he likes his job very much, he says he is getting old and can't work like this all the time because he is getting tired. He knows that because he has no papers, he has no choice but to keep working. Going back to Mexico is not an option because we left everything to follow the American dream, there is a lot of violence there and his children are here.

He, like all the people here, is hoping for an immigration amnesty in order to fix his residency, but until that happens, we are here to inform them that they have rights, they can receive help and we are united with them to help them. Thanks to the Project Protect program that makes it possible to reach out to these people who don't know about the help and services they can receive especially now with the COVID pandemic. Many people felt lost but we gave them information about doctors, vaccines and COVID testing.</text>

              <text>I wanted to share an amazing time my family and I had with the Mountain Fresh H2A Workers. My mother works with all of them sorting out onions. But this event was a little more special for me than others. We often use Thanksgiving to be grateful for the Food we have, the house we live in or our family members. This thanksgiving I gave thanks for the hands that collect our food. We often are thankful for the farmer but not the workers. It was amazing to enjoy this holiday with them and eat with them as most of them never celebrate such holiday. A Holiday that should revolve around them. End of Harvest as the dictionary describes yet they continue to work for most of the winter until end of December, some come back in January. My family, my mother, my brother, my husband and my daughters they all saw where these gentleman live, their conditions and the humble personalities they have. It brought my daughter a new perspective in her small person, it also brought my husband a little more respect for the work I, as his wife, do for our workers. It brought my mother pride to see that even though her daughter is not longer in the field working alongside with her. I continue to advocate for them in general. I am Thankful, for my role, my roots, my family and Promotora Network.</text>

As he said being undocumented has not being easy, but now with COVID and the elections he feels so useless.</text>

              <text>

</text>

              <text>
No health insurance and diagnosed with cancer.

A few months ago I have been helping Maria a farm worker who lives in the city of Greeley, we met at a church meeting and she asked me where I worked, I mentioned to her that I work for an organization called Project Protect Promotora Network that helps farm workers, she let me know that she works in agriculture in a dairy and asked me for help because she had outstanding medical bills, since she does not have health insurance and does not know how to navigate the health system to access discounts or charity programs that help people with limited resources.

In this regard it is important to note that farmers earn minimum wage in Colorado and also overtime is even after 60 hours of work in a week, something that definitely impacts their income, quality of life and access to healthcare.

Maria in fact is very worried because her health was not very good, she had no insurance and needed urgent medical studies, so to alleviate this concern I took her to the hospital and showed her how to ask for help for the charity program in which she was approved.

About 3 months after that in December 2022, Maria called me and gave me the news that she was diagnosed with cancer in the uterus, it broke both our hearts, she was very worried thinking that she could die and especially thinking that she did not have enough resources to make the treatments of a terminal illness, However, I reminded her that she had the charity program approved, that this would help her a little so that she could be attended by a doctor in the hospital and that her life had more value than any medical debt, and with this said, she began to be attended, more studies were done and surgery was scheduled immediately.

Her eyes were still showing uncertainty, Maria is a single woman, almost 60 years old, she has no children and her only sister in the USA is in a nursing home, she does not speak or walk because she had a stroke, basically she is alone, she has no one in her family that can give her economic or moral support, in this difficult time, so she has found in us, the promoters of Project Protect, a support, a ray of hope.

I committed myself to be with her in this process, I picked her up at her house, took her to the hospital, accompanied her to register her, interpret, pray and squeeze her hand before she entered the surgery that was scheduled for 10:30 am and lasted about 3 hours and a half, then I stayed at the hospital waiting for news about the results since there were two scenarios one where they would only do a hysterectomy and another where they could intervene up to the intestines, thank God the cancer was concentrated only in the uterus.

The Doctor called me to let me know that the surgery went well without complications, Maria had taken the first step to start this battle against cancer, other chemotherapy and radiation treatments will come, but we will be there with her to support her in the process, as her recovery will take quite some time. We will be there with her to support her in the process, because her recovery will take a long time, where she will not have a salary, so as promoters we will manage different aids for her to overcome this difficult stage, especially because this disease is not only about surgery, it is also about mental health, how not to let her fall into depression and anxiety so that she can recover and can return to work, feel alive and productive.

Maria's case continues to remind us that access to health care should be a fundamental human right, regardless of race or immigration status. Life is worth more than a medical debt!
</text>
