</text>

One 65 year old man told us he wish he have SS# so this way he can be at home, he is being here since 1997 and until now he is not able to receive any assistance. His life is being only working and try to save money to survive. He told us he feels lonely, specially during this elections or when he saw the news and the way the president express him self about our community. <text>This story was shared by promotoras Amalia Baltazar and Amanda Alanis who work in the San Luis Valley region of Colorado. On August 11th, Amalia and Amanda were interviewing an agricultural worker from Alamosa County along with a film crew from PBS. The worker lived in a small place with no central air conditioning, and it only had the essentials, such as an old couch that had fabric falling off it, one table with two chairs, a small tv, and a very thin rug. The worker told the promotoras and PBS crew though that he was very grateful for what he had, and that he did not care about his own living conditions. Instead, he was entirely focused on working and sending money home to his family, and he said that he was okay with living with what he needed rather than with what he wanted. He did not request any help from the Amalia and Amanda, but they shared his story because it shines a spotlight on the living conditions that many agricultural workers accept when they come to the U.S. for work. The worker was extremely forthcoming and candid about his experience and his journey, which the PBS crew was grateful for. They kept thanking both Amalia and Amanda as well as the worker for sharing his story, and they emphasized how crucial they felt it was for his story to be shared.</text>

              <text>

</text>

              <text>Capulin, Sprinkler, Cap7

On a chilly 28°F evening, with a wind chill of 11-13mph, a frozen alfalfa field conveyed its droughty and boundless self. The area spans over 130 acres and is referred to as, Sprinkler #7 by the foreman. It is also known as, Cap7, (Capulin, CO - Sprinkler #7) as it’s labeled in the app, FieldNET.

On an evening as such, dressing accordingly isn’t just a necessity, it’s a precondition. And I knew better! Growing up in the country my entire life, Colorado climate isn’t for the faintest of hearts. The San Luis Valley (SLV, Valley) doesn’t get to shield from this notion, so I ensured I was dressed head-to-toe with warm clothing. I instantly felt the chill in the air as I stepped out of the truck which sent shivers throughout my body. It’s a different kind of cold when you are in the Valley, especially when there aren’t any buildings shielding you from the cold, as it is seen in the pictures. We are in the country, where buildings are few and far between. On this ranch, trees were “cut down to make more room for planting and growing”. The original layout of this ranch has been altered time and time again to accommodate growing space for a profitable market.

I immediately smelled manure. Cow droppings were everywhere, as “cows are let in to eat and walk through field”. As I stepped closer to the sprinkler, the wind took over my senses: the smell became mixed in with the wind- making my nostrils fight to take in only what oxygen it needed.

What I was able to immediately notice when driving with the foreman toward the sprinkler, was land upon land upon more land. We drove right on top of the alfalfa. The road to access the control box was being occupied by the sprinkler itself. It made for a bumpy ride, with major feet deep dips as we drove over dried out tire marks. At this time of year, any rancher would note that the field already had more than one cut. And for the foreman, he was quick to convey, “three times. In a year!” The sun might have been out for portions of the San Luis Valley, but in Capulin, CO the west side displayed a brewing storm. In the Southwestern side of The Rocky Mountains, lay the San Juan Mountain Range along the Conejos Peak, it shared in some dark clouds this evening. As the sun sets in the west, shadows appear to overtake the right angles of our bodies. A great play on lighting for this side of the Valley.

As we approached the control box to the sprinkler, the foreman took out his handy wire cutter, and untangled the twisted wire to allow us to enter the gated area where the “water pump, control box, booster machine, filter, pipes and fertilizer tank” rest. So many machines, gadgets, buttons, pumps and weeds overtake the small area. It is gated to ensure “no animals” enter. All the water that enters the sprinkler comes from the local “river. Todo es gravity water. No pumping! If water is low or no pressure, the booster turns on for faster water”. As I asked him what a booster is or does, he explained that water flows to the underground pipeline by electricity and when it doesn’t the booster will give it a shove.

I was also able to witness technology being utilized in this remote area. The foreman had upgraded his cell phone from a flip-phone to a smart phone in order to download an app, FieldNET. FieldNET is a handy app where one can control any given sprinkler in regards to: “speed, water, walk empty or with water, and even the farm” from your phone. He was eager to show me how to log-in, scroll down to any of the 12 sprinklers in this area he monitors, along with how to navigate the system from the palm of your hand. He clicked on Cap7, the sprinkler we were currently standing by, to demonstrate how he was able to control the amount of water the sprinkler system could release, the speed in which it could travel, the temperature it would automatically stop or restart, and how it could be powered off. When asked, temperatures below “35°F it stops”. At, “40°F it starts up”, indicating that temperatures dictate whether a sprinkler can operate without having the pipes freeze.

Even though it was an unbearable night of enduring harsh winter weather conditions, it was a learning experience. A field trip of sorts. The explanation of buttons, machines, and even the app, allowed for the foreman to show appreciation for his own work- a sense of pride coming from him. His extensive knowledge of how the sprinkler system works is endless, just like the span of land the sprinkler possesses. He was in farm mode, country mode, and not even weather would be able to stop him. However, with the new FieldNET app, “I can drink my cafecito and work from home!” What a country boy dream!</text>

              <text>In the area north of Colorado, promotora Ana Schultz interacted with agricultural workers in groups and individually. She also called the workers. Two of the workers that Ana interacted with worked at the Lecheria La Luna and were charged with a DUI one weekend in November 2021. After a long day of work, they went out for drinks in the Fort Collins area. One of the agricultural workers had a car accident and the other one was stopped while driving. Both workers were taken to the Fort Collins jail and released with court dates by the middle of November. But both workers did not speak English, were undocumented and do not possess a driver’s license. One of the workers had a previous traffic ticket as well. Ana was planning on assisting both workers in writing a personal testimony and recommended that they obtained letters of good character from their employer.

This story highlights some of the issues many of these agricultural workers face which includes not understanding the legal system and needing assistance to understand the legal due process. For example, another worker in the north of Colorado, who also did not speak English, did not understand the legal due process and outcomes of some charges he had received. Since this worker did not understand the legal system, Ana was going to review the charges and help the worker write a letter to the court. Promotoras like Ana Schultz are helping agricultural workers by following up with the District Attorney to inquire if a public defender will be assigned to this agricultural worker and if he would have a court translator.

These workers face many challenges like not understanding the legal system nor being fluent in English which means it is very important to make sure that the workers know their rights, the legal system, and have a translator with them throughout the whole process.</text>

He had not been seen by a doctor and at the time there was no medical documentation of his physical state. This agricultural worker did not understand that he needed medical documentation so promotoras like Ana Schultz explained to him the due medical process and the reason why having medical documentation would be important. Ana recommended for him to be seen by a medical professional at a nearby clinic so that they would be able to work on building up a medical case which would help him search for medical funding. This worker was very grateful for the help he received from the promotora that he even promised he would go to the doctor for a check-up. Workers like the one from this story need help navigating medical insurance and need financial help as well. These are things that impact their livelihood which means it is very important for them to receive this kind of help.</text>

              <text>
Promotora Tomi and I were driving the county roads to visit a dairy in Northern Fort Collins. We were carrying with us hats with neck protectors and bottles of water.

It was a hot summer day and at distance we could see a cuadrilla working in a corn field.

As we got closer to the field we parked in a safe place. The workers were too far away to reach but there was one working at a water pump. We walked towards him and introduced ourselves sharing what type help we offered at Project Protect Promotores. Tomi chatted with him and found out that he knew her husband!

The worker told us that he worked for a local ranch but they moved around to different fields.

We gave him one of the hats and he said , “ No one has ever given me something free.” His reaction was so precious and his gratitude so genuine.

We left feeling good knowing that we had made someone happy that day!
</text>

              <text>
This story is about a young veterinarian from Torreón, Chihuahua México. This young man had only been practicing his career for two years. Last year he was brought to the United States. First to Texas, then to Colorado. Contracted to work on a cattle feedlot. He was promised many things like very high pay, housing and benefits.

He accepted, thinking that since he had experience working with animals it would be relatable to what he was used to doing, but he never imaged how difficult and heavy it was to work in a cattle factory-feedlot, on top of long work hours. Today he makes $3,000 a month. It is less than what he deserves and what is fair for the long hours he works. Even so, this income is a lot more than what he was used to making in his country of origin.

What that small salary he needs to cover all his expenses like food, rent, which is high in this country, and clothing. What he has left over is for his family in Mexico. Even though they did not deliver on any of what they promised him, he does not want to file a complaint. He is a very humble person and with a fear of losing his job. He wants his job and to be brought back in the future. After taxes only $2,500 a month (sic) he doesn’t complain since he knows that if he returns to Mexico he will not be able to support his family financially and be financially sound in general.

His dreams and goals are bigger than this injustice for him to raise a complaint about it. He says that he will move forward because he knows that this is temporary, in the end rewarding.
</text>

But when they come here they do H2A work. One just got hurt by a cow and they wanted to send them to Mexico because they knew they could get in trouble.
They ignored him and finally took him to Urgent care but they kept asking him to go back to work. On top of that they charge the guys 500$ rent on small house rooms</text>
