<text>

</text>

              <text>
I met a lady farm worker. She is 60 years old. She has been working in agriculture for 40 years. I talked to her about her experiences, "vivencias", in this work. She told me where she has worked and her plans for the future.

Today I will tell you about a worker I met in an agricultural field. She has been working in agriculture for 40 years. At a young age, she migrated from Mexico to California. That is where she got her start in agricultural work. This lady has worked in strawberries, peaches, oranges, apples and grapes.

It was difficult for her to continue working in California because she suffered abuses in her work, such as long hours and not getting paid. She was scammed, and hurt and received no support from her employer. What forced her to come to Colorado was that immigration started going to the job sites and her job was one of them.

She is currently here. She rents a very small place. It's just a room where she sleeps. She cooks on a small grill. She has no kitchen or living room, she shares a bathroom. This worker is not married, she has no children. She tells me that at 65 years of age she does not have the strength she used to have and she is very worried about the future. She says she doesn't know how to do any work other than in the fields, she cannot read or write. She tells me that in me she has found great support and for the first time a person who understands her and whom she can trust.
</text>

              <text>
I am Juana Armijo, and I’ve been in the United States since 2002. I am the mother of six children. Three have been deported and one died in an accident. All of my 17 grandchildren were born here in the US. I’m the wife of a US citizen whom I care for because he is disabled from diabetes.

I worked about five or six years as an agriculture worker in Colorado and Arizona. I’ve worked with all kinds of vegetables and roses and in all of these places, working conditions were terrible. There is no rest on Saturdays and Sundays. I experienced exploitation in every place that I worked, such as wage theft and sexual harassment. One of my bosses fired me when I asked for permission to go to the clinic, and they didn’t give us water. There were no bathrooms, and we had to go in the river and the cornfields. There was no water to wash to get the insecticide off our hands before eating.

We were shown a video that explained the dangers of the pesticides, that they could give us cancer, and we had to sign a paper saying that we understood the consequences and that they were not responsible. They did not give us masks or gloves to protect ourselves.

I worked packing corn and lettuce in Brighton, CO. With corn we began at 7 in the morning and worked until 11 pm at night. People fainted and fell among the knives. When it was time to cut the lettuce, we started at 2 in the morning in the darkness and when the sun started to come up, we would start to pack the lettuce in bags and we worked until 10 at night.

In some jobs I made complaints and they fired me. I had to put up with it out of necessity.

Instead of a guest worker program, agricultural workers, just like all workers, need a path to citizenship in order to stop the exploitation. Not just anyone can do this work; it’s very hard work. We need job protection and pay protection, and this is gained by having papers in order to get good medical care and better pay.

</text>

</text>

MC: Yes Mr. Murillo! Please introduce yourself and proceed to testimony.

LM: My name is Luis Murillo and I reside in the San Luis Valley. I am a regional organizer for Project Protect and a middle school principal. I would like to give testimony to inform you on the impact that housing and low wages have had on families in the valley. Farmworkers work hard and long hours, often more than 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. When the pandemic started affecting the San Luis valley, I, as a school principal, had the privilege of working from home while they kept working. The sorting line and the potato sellers do not allow for distancing. Pretty soon we had outbreaks in our area, we heard from workers, "I'd died of COVID and a family died of hunger." People were scared of speaking up because they fear retaliation and losing their job. Housing for agricultural workers is inadequate and during COVID, workers endangerd their lives. Center (Colorado) has migrant camps where per room where seasonal workers sleep and shower during our heavy season, and in other places two families share one bathroom. These living places make quarantining impossible and COVID soon got into the housing facilities. But even when families live alone, their housing is a hazard. Steph was just 13 years old. She passed away on January 6th from smoke inhalation. Her mother was at work while she stayed home watching her younger siblings and attempting to do homework. Her death could have been avoided if the trailer she lived in had appropriate windows so that the families would not have to run many heaters to make it through the freezing winter temperatures. To afford better housing, workers need the same wage protections as other Colorado workers. Center's school district is the poorest district in the state as measured by the number of students who qualify for free or reduced school lunch per population. The pandemic has shone a light on this issue even more. As organizers we have delivered and handed out about 4,000 boxes of food. The boxes of food have gone to the people who make the food. Again, I am a proud middle school principal. The pandemic and these inequities are causing my students to come to school not ready to learn. Students are bringing trauma, anxiety, stress, and depression, which is leading to the learning gap widening. This bill will ensure that workers enjoy the same minimum wage protections and ability to work together to improve their work and housing conditions as all other Colorado workers. Therefore, I urge the committee to support Senator Danielson and SB21-087. Thank you.

MC: Thank you. Uh, is there any questions for Mr. Murillo? Thank, Thank you Mr. Murillo for your testimony, Senator Danielson?
</text>
