Buenas Tardes,yo soy una mujer mexicana que trabaja en los files en el Noreste de Colorado en el condado de Morgan. El trabajar en la agricultura es difícil, este es un trabajo pesado y no muy bien pagado. Son jornadas largas y muy mal pagadas, en esto se hace mucho sacrificio pq soy madre de familia. Es complicado dejar a los niños en la escuela temprano y llegar lo más rápido que se pueda al trabajo. Algunas veces la labor empieza muy temprano y nuestros hijos tienen que alistarse y caminar a la escuela solos. Cuando estamos trabajando los patrones se molestan y no son flexibles a nuestros horarios como madres de familia. Yo entiendo que es mi trabajo pero quisiera que asi como yo respondo en mi trabajo hubiera un poco más de flexibilidad de parte de ellos, pero algunas veces no es toda la responsabilidad de los patrones, es de los encargados que desgraciadamente son hispanos como nosotros.

En el trabajo no siempre nos proporcionan agua o baño. Algunas veces cuando nos proporcionan el baño, tenemos que evitar el tomar agua pq no nos dejan ir seguido  al baño. Tenemos que trabajar aunque esté el sol fuerte, lloviendo. Esto es algo que no es valorado de parte de nuestros empleadores. Y a pesar de que hacemos nuestro trabajo como nos dicen no siempre están  conformes. Muchas veces nos sentimos discriminados por nuestra apariencia o por el simple hecho de no tener papeles.

El salario es el mínimo nos pagan a $13.00 por hora, el  tiempo es corrido sin oportunidad de tiempo extra (overtime). Son largas jornadas de trabajo y con lo que nos pagan algunas veces no sacamos ni para pagar renta, comida o biles. Algunas veces tenemos que escoger o priorizar qué es lo más importante.

Mi vida en la cuarentena fue dificil pq trabajamos con miedo de enfermarnos, porque nosotros no paramos de trabajar. Hubo mucha más gente pidiendo trabajo y el no conocerlos o saber si estaban sanos nos preocupaba. No había medidas de seguridad, nunca nos chequearon la temperatura o preguntaban si nos sentíamos mal. Solo nos daban una mascarilla por turno y no eran estrictos ya que no todos lo usaban ya que fácil eramos mas de 10 personas en un lugar cerrado. Si yo me sentía mal tenía que trabajar de todos modos por miedo a perder mi trabajo. 

Después nos dimos cuenta de que los patrones nos estaban pagando a $18.00 la hora pero el mayordomo nos pagaba a $13, esto fue muy lamentable porque solo un compañero tuvo el valor de reclamarle al mayordomo y perdió su trabajo. Yo honestamente mejor no dije nada pq de ahí comemos mis hijos y yo. Esto se ve muy seguido cuando trabajamos en el campo, los patrones pagan una cosa y nosotros recibimos otra.

[P: Si tuviera oportunidad de hablar con legisladores que les diría?]

Yo les diría que el trabajo en la agricultura fuera mejor pagado, que se hicieran valer nuestros derechos básicos como seres humanos. Igualdad para los que tienen y no tienen papeles porque hacemos el mismo trabajo. Que dejen de explotarnos en jornadas tan largas y si son jornadas largas tener derecho a overtime. Yo no le temo al trabajo, pq a eso vine solo quiero lo justo.

Good afternoon, I,m a Mexican woman who works in the field in Northeast Colorado in Morgan County. Working in agriculture is difficult, this is heavy work and not very well paid. These are long days and very poorly paid, in this a lot of sacrifice is made because I am a mother of a family. It’s  hard to drop the kids off at school early and get to work as fast as possible. Sometimes the work starts very early and our children have to enlist and walk to school alone. When we are working the bosses get upset and are not flexible to our schedules as mothers. I understand it’s my job, but I wish that just as I respond in my work there would be a little more flexibility on their part, but sometimes it’s not all the employers, it’s the managers who are unfortunately Hispanic like us.

At work we are not always provided water or bathroom breaks. Sometimes when we are provided a bathroom, we have to avoid drinking water because they won’t let us go to the bathroom often. We have to work even if the sun is strong, raining. This is something that is not valued by our employers. And even though we do

our job as we’re told, they’re not always happy. Many times we feel discriminated against by our

appearance or simply because we don’t have papers.

The salary is the minimum we are paid at $13.00 per hour, without overtime opportunity. They are long working days and with what we are paid sometimes we do not even make enough to pay rent, food or bills. Sometimes we have to choose or prioritize what is most important.

My life in quarantine was hard because we worked in fear of getting sick, because we didn’t stop working. There were a lot more people asking for work and not knowing them or knowing if they were healthy worried us. There were no security measures, they never checked our temperature or asked if we felt bad. They only gave us one mask per shift and they were not strict as not everyone wore it as it was easy to be more than 10 people in a closed place. If I felt bad I had to work anyway for fear of losing my job. 

Then we realized that the employers were paying us at $18.00 an hour but the manager was paying us at $13, this was very unfortunate because only one partner had the courage to claim from the butler and lost his job. I honestly didn’t say anything because this job is how I feed myself and my kids. This is seen very often when we work in the field, bosses pay one thing and we get another.

[Q: If you had the opportunity to speak with legislators, what would you say?]

I would tell them that the work in agriculture should be better paid, that our basic rights were asserted as human beings. Equality for those who have and don’t have papers because we do the same job. Let them stop exploiting us in such long days and if it is long days they have the right to overtime. I’m not afraid of work, because that’s what I came to, I just want the right thing.
