In early February, an agricultural worker from reached out to Zoila Gomez, the Regional Director of Los Promotores del Valle de San Luis, because he was having medical issues. He then explained that he had been injured on the job at the end of January after he was sickened while welding. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he had some blood tests done and received oxygen. A week later, he was experiencing consistent chest pain, so Zoila reached out to a local doctor who advised him to take some aspirin for the time being. The worker did not have any aspirin on hand, so Zoila contacted her team member Anita Rodrigues, a promotores from Center, CO. Anita was able to meet the worker and his friend at gas station to gave him medicine and a bag of emergency food and medicine kit.
The promotores continued to follow up with the worker through WhatsApp messages, even calling a doctor in Mexico who advised “co and advised for him to eat bananas, tomatoes, milk.”
The promotoras advised the worker to inform his employer about his recent health issues, but the worker did not want to bother anyone and felt that he would be okay, so he continued to work even though he should have been resting. The worker expressed an immense sense of relief and gratitude towards the promotoras who gave him supplies and helped him to feel that he was not alone in his health struggles.
